Route, time on the road and stops

The car leaves Salzburg, joins the A8 and crosses into Germany within minutes. In normal traffic you reach Munich in about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. On Friday and Sunday evenings, during holidays and in the ski season, traffic around Munich can be heavier, so leave a reserve if you have a fixed appointment.

Stops are possible whenever you like. Popular ones are a coffee break, a short walk by the Chiemsee next to the motorway or a quick lunch on the way. Ask for them when booking so the timing works out.

Is a private car better than the train, bus or a taxi?

Not always, and we say so openly. A single traveller with a small bag who is staying near Munich main station may find the train perfectly fine. The picture changes when you count luggage, children, skis, an early start or an address away from the stations: then every change adds time and effort.

Coaches between Salzburg and Munich are another budget option, with fixed departure times and stops that may be far from your destination.
