A queue at a border crossing can take from half an hour to several hours. The longest waits are usually on Friday evenings, at weekends, before holidays and in summer. Here is a short guide to the main crossings in Western Ukraine and how to plan your trip.
Main crossings for cars
| Country | Crossing | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Poland | Krakovets - Korczowa | Lviv to Kraków and Rzeszów |
| Poland | Shehyni - Medyka | Lviv to Przemyśl and Kraków |
| Poland | Rava-Ruska - Hrebenne | Lviv to Warsaw and Lublin |
| Slovakia | Uzhhorod - Vyšné Nemecké | Uzhhorod, Mukachevo to Košice and Bratislava |
| Hungary | Chop (Tysa) - Záhony | Chop, Uzhhorod to Budapest |
| Hungary | Luzhanka - Beregsurány | Mukachevo, Berehove to Budapest |
| Romania | Porubne - Siret | Chernivtsi to Suceava |

How to check where the queue is shorter
- The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine publishes queue data on its website and app.
- Many crossings can be seen on webcams.
- Drivers who cross every week usually know which crossing is faster today.
When to leave
If you are heading to a flight, allow several hours for the border. Early on a weekday morning queues are usually shorter than in the evening or at weekends. For an early flight it is often best to leave the evening before and stay near the airport.

Bus or car
A bus is checked as a whole: until every passenger and bag is checked, nobody moves on. In a car the check is quicker, and the driver can pick the crossing with the shorter queue.
What to take
- Your passport and any documents required to leave in your case.
- Documents for a child travelling without one of the parents.
- Water and snacks, the wait can be long.
Rules for leaving Ukraine, including for men, are set by the State Border Guard Service. Check the current requirements before you travel.
