How the private day trip works

The driver picks you up at your hotel or apartment in Vienna at the agreed time and waits with a name sign. Waiting is free until you come out. You drive to Hallstatt, the driver drops you at the P1 or P2 car park by the tunnel, because cars cannot drive freely into the village centre, and from there it is a few minutes on foot. While you explore, the driver waits and then takes you back to Vienna.

Route, time on the road and stops

The pure driving time from Vienna to Hallstatt is about 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. With a short stop it becomes 3.5 to 4 hours each way, so plan a long but relaxed day.

On the way you can stop in St. Wolfgang, a lakeside village on the Wolfgangsee, or in Gmunden on the Traunsee. One stop on the way out and perhaps a coffee break on the way back keep the day balanced. Tell us your wishes when booking.

Tips: season, crowds and best time to visit

Hallstatt is small and very popular. The middle of the day in summer brings the most visitors, so an early start pays off: arriving in the late morning still gives you quieter moments, and the village calms down again in the afternoon. Weekdays are usually less busy than weekends.

Spring and autumn offer softer light and fewer people. In winter the village is quiet and snowy, but days are short, so leave Vienna early. Wear comfortable shoes, as the lanes are steep in places. More about the village is on our Hallstatt page.
