Krakow itself is a city of history and culture rather than ski slopes, but it is one of the best bases for a winter holiday in Poland. Within roughly two hours you can reach the Tatra Mountains, the Podhale region and the Beskids, with resorts for complete beginners as well as experienced skiers. Many visitors combine a few days of skiing with sightseeing in the Old Town and Wawel.
Here is a guide to the main resorts near Krakow, what their slopes offer and how to plan your trip.
Best ski resorts near Krakow

Zakopane and Kasprowy Wierch
Zakopane, approx. 110 km and around 2 hours from Krakow, is the winter capital of Poland. The highlight is Kasprowy Wierch, where a cable car climbs to almost 2,000 metres and serves the most alpine slopes in the country. Smaller areas such as Gubałówka and Polana Szymoszkowa are great for families and evening skiing.

Białka Tatrzańska
Białka Tatrzańska, approx. 100 km away, is one of the most modern resorts in Poland. The Kotelnica Białczańska area has wide, well-groomed runs, fast chairlifts and good snow-making, and thermal pools nearby are perfect after a day on the slopes.

Szczyrk
Szczyrk in the Silesian Beskids, approx. 120 km and around 1 hour 45 minutes from Krakow, offers one of the largest networks of pistes in Poland, with options for every level.

Smaller resorts
Bukowina Tatrzańska, Jurgów, Witów and Kluszkowce near Lake Czorsztyn are smaller, quieter areas that suit families and relaxed skiing.

Getting to the slopes
The most comfortable option is a car or private transfer from Krakow Airport or your hotel. Buses and trains run to Zakopane, with the bus usually being faster, but the main road to Zakopane is often congested at weekends.
