Bad Gastein is a historic spa town and ski resort in the Gastein valley in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It is part of the Ski Amadé region and offers skiing on Stubnerkogel, Graukogel and nearby Sportgastein, together with famous thermal baths and Belle Epoque architecture. It is a great choice for skiers who also want to relax after a day on the slopes.

The town is well connected by road and rail. Below you will find the main ways to get there and a few tips for the journey.

By car or private transfer

Bad Gastein is reached via the Tauern motorway and the Gastein valley road. Approximate distances and travel times:

From Salzburg Airport

approx. 100 km, around 1.5 hours.

From Munich Airport

approx. 230 km, around 2.5 to 3 hours.

From Vienna

approx. 380 km, around 4 hours.

From Bratislava

A private transfer picks you up at the airport or your city hotel and drives you straight to your accommodation. Many guests combine a few days in the capital with the mountains, so see our Vienna transfers and Vienna ski resort transfers.

By train

Bad Gastein has its own railway station on the Tauern line, which is a big advantage. Trains from Salzburg take approximately 1.5 hours, and there are also connections from Vienna, usually with a change in Salzburg or Schwarzach-St. Veit. The station is close to the town centre and the Stubnerkogel gondola, although the town is hilly and the walk with luggage can be steep.

By bus

Regional buses connect the villages of the Gastein valley, including Bad Hofgastein, Bad Gastein and Sportgastein. They are useful for moving between ski areas during your stay, while long-distance arrivals are usually easier by train or car.

By taxi

Local taxis are handy from the station to your hotel, especially as Bad Gastein is built on a steep slope. For a long trip from an airport, a pre-booked transfer is generally more comfortable and predictable.
