Axamer Lizum is one of the closest ski resorts to Innsbruck and a favourite with locals who know where to find good snow. The resort lies in the Kalkkögel mountains at an altitude of roughly 1,600 to 2,300 metres and hosted alpine events at the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. Today it is known for wide pistes, excellent freeride terrain and a snow park, all within easy reach of the Tyrolean capital.
Thanks to its location, getting to Axamer Lizum is relatively simple, whether you arrive by plane, train or car. Here is an overview of your options.
By car or private transfer
From Innsbruck the resort is only about 20 km away and the drive takes around 30 minutes, climbing through the village of Axams to the base station. Innsbruck Airport is just as close, so you can be on the slopes less than an hour after landing. From Munich the distance is approximately 170 km, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, and from Vienna about 480 km, which means around 5 hours on the motorway.
The access road is well maintained, but in heavy snowfall chains or winter tyres are required and parking at the base can be full on sunny weekends. A private transfer solves both problems: you are dropped off right at the lifts and picked up when you are done. Read more about our Innsbruck Airport ski transfers.

By ski bus from Innsbruck
During the winter season a ski bus runs between Innsbruck and Axamer Lizum several times a day. The journey takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes depending on the stops. It is a convenient option if you are staying in the city centre, although buses can be crowded in the morning and you have to carry your equipment to and from the stop. Check the current timetable and ticket conditions before your trip.
By train
There is no railway to the resort itself, but Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof is well connected with Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Zurich. From the station you continue by ski bus, taxi or a pre-booked transfer. If you travel from Vienna by train, the trip to Innsbruck takes about 4 to 4.5 hours.

Tips for your ski day
The best snow and the shortest lift queues are in the morning.

Why a private transfer makes sense
With a private transfer you do not depend on bus timetables or parking spaces. This is ideal for families, groups and anyone who wants to make the most of short ski holidays.
