The Seegrotte in Hinterbrühl is one of the most unusual day trips from Vienna. This former gypsum mine flooded in the early 20th century and today holds one of the largest underground lakes in Europe. Visitors take a guided walk through the old tunnels and then glide across the lake by boat. The temperature inside stays cool all year round, so it is a great idea both in summer heat and on a rainy day.

Hinterbrühl lies in the Vienna Woods, approximately 20 km south-west of the city centre. Here is how to get there by private transfer, train and bus.

Private transfer or car

By car the trip takes approximately 25-35 minutes, depending on where you start in Vienna and on traffic on the A21 or the roads through Mödling. A private transfer is especially handy because you can combine the Seegrotte with other nearby sights in the same half day.

  • Pickup from your hotel and drop-off right at the entrance.
  • The driver can wait during the visit and take you back or onwards.
  • Easy to add Mödling, Liechtenstein Castle or Heiligenkreuz Abbey.
  • Comfortable for families with children and older travellers.

Train and bus

The most common public transport route is a suburban train (S-Bahn) from Vienna to Mödling, which takes about 15-20 minutes from the main stations. From Mödling station regional buses run towards Hinterbrühl and stop near the Seegrotte. Overall, allow around 45-60 minutes from central Vienna, depending on connections.

Badner Bahn and other options

Some visitors use the Badner Bahn light rail from the Vienna Opera area towards the south and continue by bus or taxi. It is a scenic ride, but slower than the S-Bahn. A taxi from Mödling station to the Seegrotte is short and convenient if you miss a bus.
