Milan is Italy's capital of fashion, design and business. Travellers come for trade fairs, fashion weeks, shopping in the Quadrilatero della Moda, the Duomo, La Scala and Leonardo's Last Supper. The trip from Vienna to Milan is a long one, approximately 850-900 km, so it is worth choosing the right way to travel.
Below we compare private transfer, flights, trains and buses, with approximate travel times and tips to make the journey easier.
Private transfer by car
The most common road route goes south via Graz and Klagenfurt to Villach, then into Italy past Udine, Venice and Verona to Milan. The drive takes approximately 8.5-9.5 hours without long stops. A private transfer is a great option for families, groups or travellers who want to see more along the way.

- No luggage limits and no airport security queues.
- For long trips, two drivers can be arranged.

Flights
Flying is the fastest option. Direct flights from Vienna to Milan take approximately 1.5 hours and usually land at Milan Malpensa or Linate. Remember to add time for getting to the airport, check-in and security, as well as the transfer into the city. Malpensa is about 50 km from central Milan, so many travellers book a transfer from Milan Malpensa in advance.
Train
There is no fast direct daytime train between Vienna and Milan. Typical connections involve changes, for example in Venice, Verona or via Munich and the Brenner Pass. The total journey usually takes around 10-12 hours. A night train is also an option on some dates, letting you sleep while you travel.
Bus
Long-distance coaches run between Vienna and Milan, often overnight. The journey can take 12 hours or more. It is the cheapest option but the least comfortable for such a long trip.

Tips for your trip
Italian motorways have tolls, and Austria requires a vignette if you drive yourself.
Avoid peak holiday weekends in summer, when traffic towards Italy is heavy.
Book hotels and drivers early during Milan Fashion Week and major trade fairs.
In Milan, many central areas have restricted traffic zones, so a local driver is helpful.
