Ljubljana, the green and compact capital of Slovenia, is a popular next stop for travellers exploring Central Europe from Vienna. The city charms visitors with its riverside cafés, the castle on the hill and easy access to Lake Bled, the Postojna Cave and the Adriatic coast.
The distance between Vienna and Ljubljana is approximately 380 km. You can cover it by car, train or bus, and each option has its pros and cons.
By car or private transfer
The drive takes about 4 hours. The route follows the A2 motorway south through Graz, crosses the border at Spielfeld and continues past Maribor on the Slovenian motorway to Ljubljana. You need a vignette in both Austria and Slovenia, and in summer and on holiday weekends there can be queues near the border and around Graz.
A private transfer is the most comfortable way to travel. The driver picks you up at your hotel in Vienna or at Vienna Airport and takes you straight to your accommodation in Ljubljana. You can stop in Graz for lunch or visit a winery in Styria on the way. Learn more about our chauffeur service in Europe.

By train
Trains between Vienna and Ljubljana run via Graz and Maribor. The journey takes around 6 hours and, depending on the connection, may require a change. The scenery along the Mur valley is beautiful, but the train is slower than the car and you still need to get from Ljubljana station to your hotel. Check the current timetable before booking, as connections change from season to season.
By bus
Several long-distance bus companies connect Vienna and Ljubljana, and the trip takes roughly 5 hours. Buses are usually the cheapest choice, but luggage space is limited and departure times are fixed. Delays at the border or in traffic are also common in high season.
