Vienna International Airport in Schwechat is the main gateway to the world not only for Vienna, but for Bratislava as well. It lies only about 55 km from the Slovak capital, closer than many airports are to their own cities, and it offers far more direct flights than Bratislava airport. The real question is how to get there comfortably and on time.
Below we compare every realistic way from Bratislava to Vienna Airport and back: buses, the train, taxis, a private transfer and your own car with airport parking. You will also find tips on planning your departure.
How far is Vienna Airport from Bratislava?
The road distance from central Bratislava to the airport is approx. 55-60 km. Most of the route runs on the motorway past Kittsee and then on the Austrian A6 and A4. In normal traffic the drive takes about 40-50 minutes. In rush hour allow an extra 15-20 minutes. Slovakia and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so there are usually no border checks, although temporary controls are introduced from time to time.

Public transport: bus or train
Bus from Bratislava to Vienna Airport: Slovak Lines, Flixbus and RegioJet
The bus is the most popular budget option. Several carriers run between Bratislava and Vienna Airport, including Slovak Lines, Flixbus and RegioJet. Most services leave from the main bus station Mlynské nivy, many also stop in Petržalka, and at the airport they stop close to the terminal.
roughly 45-60 minutes, depending on stops and traffic.
low fares, frequent departures during the day, luggage goes in the hold.
fixed timetable, few options very early in the morning or late at night, and you still need to get to the bus stop with your bags.
Timetables and fares change with the season, so always check the current schedule on the carriers' websites and buy your ticket in advance, especially in summer and around public holidays.
By train: possible, but not practical
There is no direct train from Bratislava to Vienna Airport. You would take a train from Bratislava to Vienna and then change for a train to the airport, usually at Wien Hauptbahnhof. With the change and waiting time the journey often takes 1.5-2 hours, which is considerably longer than the bus or a car. It makes sense mainly if you are already in Vienna.
Taxi, private transfer or your own car

Taxi
A taxi from Bratislava to Schwechat takes you door to door, but prices vary a lot between companies and are not always agreed in advance. Ask for a fixed price when you order. On the way back, the taxi rank at the airport is served by Austrian taxis, and a ride to Bratislava with a random car from the rank can be expensive.

Private transfer
A pre-booked private transfer from Bratislava to Vienna Airport costs from 60 € per car, not per person. The driver picks you up at your address at the time you choose, helps with the luggage and drops you right at departures. On the way back, the driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign and follows your flight, so a delay does not turn into extra stress. Your own car and parking
Driving yourself gives you full flexibility, but remember the Austrian motorway vignette and the parking fees at the airport. For a short trip parking can be reasonable, for a week or longer it adds up quickly. Check the official prices on the airport website and add fuel and the vignette to your calculation.

Finding your terminal and planning your departure
Vienna Airport is compact and well signposted. Most airlines check in at Terminal 3 or Terminal 1, and you will find your terminal in your booking confirmation or on the departure screens.
For flights within Europe, aim to be at the airport about 2 hours before departure, for long-haul flights about 3 hours.
From Bratislava, leave at least 1 hour before you want to be at the airport, earlier in rush hour or bad weather.
For early morning flights, check that your bus actually runs at that hour. If not, a transfer is often the only comfortable option.
Keep your passport or ID card at hand, even when travelling within Schengen.
Which option is best for you?
If you travel alone with a small bag during the day, the bus is hard to beat on price. If you fly very early, land late at night, travel with children or with several suitcases, a private transfer is usually the better choice. For two or more people the cost per person gets close to a taxi. Planning to stay in Vienna first? Our Vienna Airport transfers cover the city as well.
