Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Prague are often visited on one trip, and for good reason. The capitals of Central Europe lie surprisingly close to each other, and with Brno and Salzburg added you get a compact region where a few hours on the road take you to a completely different city.

Below you will find the approximate road distances and driving times between the six cities, typical train journey times and practical tips on planning the route. All figures are approximate and depend on traffic, roadworks and the exact start and end address.

Tips for planning your route

Vignettes

Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic all require a motorway vignette, usually bought online. With a transfer this is already included.

Borders

all four countries are in the Schengen area, so there are normally no checks, but always carry your passport or ID.

Combine cities

a route like Vienna - Bratislava - Budapest can be done in one day with a stop in Bratislava for lunch and a walk through the old town.

Time of day

leave early or after the morning rush hour to avoid traffic around Vienna, Budapest and Prague.

A private transfer makes sense especially for families, groups and travellers with a lot of luggage: door to door, without changes, with stops where you want them and at a fixed price for the whole car.
