A river cruise on the Danube is one of the most relaxing ways to see Central Europe. The tricky part is often not the cruise itself, but getting to the ship on the first day and from the ship to the airport on the last. Many itineraries start in one country and end in another, and some of the ports have no airport nearby.
This guide explains where Danube cruises usually start and end, how to get from the airport to your ship, how much time to plan for the connection and why a private transfer is often the easiest solution. Always check the exact pier in your cruise documents, because ships can moor at different places in the same city.
The main Danube river cruise ports and how to reach them
Vienna cruise terminal
Most river ships in Vienna moor along the Danube in the 2nd district, on the Handelskai near the Reichsbrücke, where the main Vienna cruise terminal is located. Some ships use other piers along the river. Vienna Airport is approx. 20 km away, so the drive usually takes about 25-30 minutes. Our Vienna Airport transfers into the city start from 40 € per car.
Budapest cruise port
In Budapest the ships dock right in the city centre along the Danube embankments, mostly on the Pest side, with views of the Parliament and the Buda Castle. The piers are spread over several kilometres, so the exact address matters. From Budapest airport the drive takes roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. A Budapest airport transfer costs from 40 € per car.
Passau cruise port
Passau, on the German-Austrian border, is one of the most common start and end points of Danube cruises. Ships moor along the river quays near the old town. Passau has no airport of its own. The usual options are Munich Airport, about 2 hours by car, Linz or Salzburg, or Vienna, about 3 hours away. This is where a pre-booked transfer saves the most stress.
Linz
In Linz the ships moor in the city centre near the riverside promenade. Linz has a small regional airport, but most international travellers arrive via Vienna, about 2 hours away, or via Salzburg or Munich.
Bratislava
Bratislava is more often a stop than a start, but some cruises begin or end here. The passenger piers lie on the riverbank next to the Old Town. Bratislava airport is about 20 minutes away and Vienna Airport about 45-50 minutes.
Nuremberg and the Main-Danube Canal
Longer itineraries that connect the Danube with the Main and the Rhine often start or end in Nuremberg. The ships moor at the port on the Main-Danube Canal, outside the historic centre. Nuremberg airport is about 25-30 minutes away, and Munich Airport about 2 hours.

How much time to allow for the connection
boarding usually opens in the afternoon. If you fly in on the same day, choose a flight that lands by around midday to keep a buffer for delays.
on the last day guests usually leave the ship in the morning after breakfast. A flight in the early afternoon or later from a nearby airport is a safe choice.
from Passau to Munich add about 2 hours of driving plus the usual 2 hours at the airport before departure. A flight before early afternoon is risky.
for long-haul flights, spending a night in Vienna, Budapest or Munich before the cruise removes almost all risk.
in very high or low water, cruise lines sometimes change the embarkation port at short notice. A flexible transfer can adapt more easily than a fixed train ticket.
Transfer from the final port to your departure airport
Because many cruises are one-way, you often finish in a different city from where you started. Typical combinations are Budapest to Passau, Vienna to Budapest or Nuremberg to Budapest. Cruise lines offer group transfers, but they run at fixed times and you may wait for other passengers. A private transfer picks you up at the gangway at the time you choose and takes you straight to the airport.
If your cruise ends in Budapest but your flight leaves from Vienna, a transfer between Vienna and Budapest costs from 330 € per car. For longer routes, for example from Passau or Nuremberg to Munich or Vienna, see our chauffeur service in Europe and ask for a quote.

Why a private transfer works well for cruise guests
The driver knows the piers and drops you right at the ship, not at a general address.
Plenty of room for large suitcases, which is typical for a one or two-week cruise.
Your flight is monitored, so a delay does not mean missing the pickup.
You can add a short sightseeing stop on the way, for example in Bratislava on the route from Vienna to Budapest.
