Poprad is the gateway to the High Tatras, the highest mountain range in Slovakia and one of the most beautiful winter destinations in Central Europe. From the town, it takes only a short drive to reach the main ski resorts: Tatranská Lomnica with its cable car towards Lomnický štít, Štrbské Pleso with its glacial lake and slopes for all levels, and Starý Smokovec with the Hrebienok area.

Poprad has its own airport and a station on the main railway line across Slovakia, so you can choose between several ways to get there. Here is an overview.

By car or private transfer

The D1 motorway and main roads connect Poprad with the rest of Slovakia. Approximate distances and driving times:

From Bratislava

approx. 330 km, around 3.5 hours.

From Vienna

approx. 390 km, around 4 hours.

From Krakow

approx. 160 km, around 3 hours via the Polish-Slovak border.

From Budapest

approx. 300 km, around 4 hours.

From Košice

approx. 120 km, around 1.5 hours.

A private transfer takes you straight to your hotel in Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso or Smokovec. If you are flying into Bratislava or Vienna, see our Bratislava ski resort transfers; for flights into Poland, check our Krakow ski resort transfers.

By train

Poprad-Tatry station lies on the main Bratislava - Košice line, with direct trains from Bratislava taking approximately 4 hours. From Poprad, the Tatra Electric Railway runs up to Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso, which is a scenic and practical way to reach the resorts. There is also a rack railway from Štrba to Štrbské Pleso.

By bus and plane

Long-distance buses connect Poprad with Bratislava, Košice and other cities, and local buses run to the Tatra villages. Poprad-Tatry Airport is small, with limited seasonal flights, so most international visitors fly into Bratislava, Vienna, Krakow or Košice and continue by road.

4

By taxi

Taxis from Poprad are a quick way to cover the last 15 to 30 km to the resorts. For a trip from a distant airport, a pre-booked transfer is more practical and predictable.
