Ischgl, in the Paznaun valley of Tyrol, is one of the best-known ski resorts in the Alps. Together with Samnaun across the Swiss border it forms the Silvretta Arena, a large ski area with high-altitude slopes, modern lifts and a famous après-ski scene. The season usually runs from late November to early May.

Ischgl is easy to reach from several international airports, but the last stretch up the valley needs a little planning. Here are the main options.

By car or private transfer

Most visitors arrive by road through the Inn valley and Landeck, then turn into the Paznaun valley. Approximate distances and driving times:

From Innsbruck Airport

approx. 100 km, around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours.

From Zurich Airport

approx. 200 km, around 2.5 hours.

From Munich Airport

approx. 260 km, around 3 hours.

From Vienna

approx. 580 km, around 6 hours.

A private transfer takes you straight from the arrivals hall to your hotel in Ischgl. For flights into Tyrol, see our Innsbruck airport ski transfers, and for all routes visit our ski transfers page.

By train and bus

The nearest railway station is Landeck-Zams on the Arlberg line, with direct trains from Innsbruck (approx. 1 hour), Zurich and Vienna. From Landeck, regional buses run up the Paznaun valley to Ischgl, a journey of approx. 45 minutes. It works well for light travellers, but with skis and suitcases the change can be tiring, especially on busy Saturdays.

By taxi

Taxis are available at Landeck-Zams station and are a convenient way to cover the final 30 km or so to Ischgl. For the full journey from an airport, a pre-booked transfer is usually more practical than looking for a taxi on arrival.

Travel tips

Saturday traffic

changeover days bring queues in the Inn and Paznaun valleys, so allow extra time.

Winter driving

winter tyres are mandatory in Austria in wintry conditions, and chains can be needed in heavy snow.

Vignette

if you drive yourself, you need an Austrian motorway vignette.

Car-free village

parts of Ischgl centre are pedestrian, so a driver who knows hotel access saves time.
